Bear feast songs from Finland, Carelia and Khanty-Mansia together with story telling and myths. Featuring Tuomas Rounakari performing with violin, ankle-bells, Ning-jug and voice.

Tuomas Rounakari is an internationally acclaimed violinist, composer and ethnomusicologist from Finland. He is a one-man-band blending violin, vocals and stomping with ankle-bells. In his performance he enters various trance-states. He is inspired by different forms of dialogue; man and nature, the seen and the unseen world, ancient and future. His first solo album Shamanviolin was a result of ethnomusicological studies of the earliest 20th century wax-cylinder recordings from Siberia. These studies have also led to many collaborations with indigenous artists. He is one of the few artists who have actually returned their art to native communities for evaluation and development. KLO 11:30 SATURDAY SEPTEMBER 23 - Balafon Variations by MAARIKA AUTIO

This experimental solo performance presents traditional West-African instruments developing from ancient, conventional recipes into modern and creative explorations.

Maarika is a rare, if not unique phenomenon as a female virtuoso of the West-African diatonic balafon. She is not shy to try and stretch her ancient instruments’ creative boundaries into new, undiscovered dimensions. For more on Maarika, visit her website. Sound engineering by Mikael Hakkarainen.

KLO 11:30 SATURDAY SEPTEMBER 30 - Sound Answers Voice by violinist Pia Siirala and clarinetist Lucy Abrams-Husso

Pia Siirala’s compositions are based and inspired by the so-called Personal Song tradition of the indigenous Tundra Chukchi in north-eastern Siberia. The personal song is an integral part of the personal identity of Arctic indigenous people. Given at birth to every child, the personal song becomes as fundamental to the person’s being as their name. During the concert the singing of the nomadic reindeer herders from her field recordings and live music enter into dialogue. Sound engineering by Robi de Godzinsky.

Inspired by this indigenous music, Siirala has created several compositions. Pia Siirala studied at the Sibelius Academy, the Budapest Liszt Academy and at the Moscow Tchaikovsky Conservatory. Ville Vannemaa, saxophone/saksofoni

Antti Ahoniemi, bass/sähköbasso

Severi Sorjonen, drums/rummut

ENG: Looking Back, Reaching Forward is the second album by the Finnish jazz musician and composer Visa Oscar (b. Visa-Pekka Oskari Mertanen, 1976). The album is the culmination of a ten-year artistic doctorate at the jazz department of Uniarts Sibelius Academy. It is the first release of the newly founded Sibis Jazz record label of the Sibelius Academy's jazz department and the Sibis Jazz Doc publication series.

On the album, you can hear influences from the styles of Chick Corea, Joe Zawinul, George Duke, Jan Hammer and Michael Brecker, through the mind of Visa Oscar.

Over the past ten years, Oscar has extensively studied the improvisation of the first-generation jazz synthesizer and has drawn influences from it for his own music. The result is a rich album that takes its inspiration from the past, combining it with contemporary sounds and moods. The top names of the Finnish jazz scene play in Visa Oscar's band: e.g. saxophonist Ville Vannemaa, bassist Antti Ahoniemi and drummer Jussi Lehtonen. In addition, the album features an impressive group of foreign and domestic top musicians: drummers Dave Weckl and Rafael Barata and bassists Carlitos Del Puerto and André Vasconcellos, as well as singer Eeppi Ursin, percussionist Ricardo Padilla and saxophonist Joonatan Rautio.

FIN: Looking Back, Reaching Forward on suomalaisen jazzmuusikko ja -säveltäjä Visa Oscarin (s. Visa-Pekka Oskari Mertanen, 1976) toinen albumi yhtyeenjohtajana. Levy on Oscarin Taideyliopiston Sibelius-Akatemian jazz-osastolla tehdyn kymmenen vuoden taiteellisen tohtorintutkinnon huipentuma. Samalla se on Sibelius-Akatemian jazzosaston vastaperustetun Sibis Jazz-levymerkin ja tohtoritutkijoiden Sibis Jazz Doc-julkaisusarjan ensimmäinen julkaisu.

Levyn kappaleissa kuullaan vaikutteita mm.

Electric Sounds with Paola Livorsi, Marek Pluciennik and Andrea Mancianti

La / Sat 24.9.2022

Andrea Mancianti, sound artist

Paola Livorsi, electronics

Marek Waldemar Pluciennik, live cinema

This concert will be presented in two parts - a solo performance by Andrea Mancianti alongside a performance of “Blackhole tween frames “ for 35mm modified film projector and electronics. “Blackhole tween frames” will incorporate electric signals from humidity sensors that have been placed into Talvipuutarha plants.

Marek Waldemar Pluciennik (FI/PL) is a Polish/Canadian filmmaker and cinema artist based in Helsinki. His work focuses on the material and ephemeral nature of the film medium. In his latest works, he interfaces traditional projectors with digital microcontrollers as he explores visual motion perception in the frame-based medium. The works are a meditative study at the extreme boundaries of apparent movement. Pluciennik refers to it as a liminal flicker, where the viewers' motion perception is tested by a "meltdown" of classic motion perception; a similar phenomenon to liminal space, where an empty space can feel unsettling and familiar at the same time. https://marek-pluciennik.mystrikingly.com/

Paola Livorsi (IT/FIN) is a composer and doctoral candidate in Sibelius Academy, Centre for Music and Technology. In her artistic research Human voice and instrumental voice: an investigation of voicelikeness, she explores the boundaries of voice and string instrument, collaborating with artists from other disciplines and experimenting with various spatial settings. She has been working with Pluciennik since 2016.

Paola on aktiivinen monikulttuuristen taiteilijayhteisöjen vaikuttaja. Hän on utelias kokeilija ja tekee mielellään yhteistyötä muiden taiteenalojen taiteilijoiden kanssa. Hän on kiinnostunut taiteesta ja yhteisöllisyydestä.

Andrea Mancianti is a composer, performer and sound artist mostly devoted to experimental sonic arts. He studied composition with Rosario Mirigliano in the Conservatory of Florence and holds an MA in composition and music technology from the same conservatory (2012) and a Bachelor in Philosophy from La Sapienza, Rome (2006). He also completed the IRCAM Cursus in Paris (2013-2014). Currently Mancianti is a PhD candidate in the department of Media at Aalto University researching case-specific sonic experiences. https://www.andreamancianti.com

Duoja 20-luvulta / 1920s Duets

La / Sat 11.9.2021, 12:15-13:15

Esiintyjät / Performers

Lea Tuuri, viulu

Mathias Hortling, sello

Ohjelma / Program

The concert will feature a 1920s Czech and French program for violin and cello, making a cross-section of 1920s modernist duo repertoire. At that time, there was a search for new forms, textures, and ways of expression in the air. The program includes the nostalgic, glorious, folk-influenced Schulhoff duo (1925), Ravel's light melodic sonata for violin and cello (1922), and Martinů's lyrical duo drawing on folk music tradition (1927).

Erkki Jokinen Rise 5 for flute and accordion (2002)

Cecilia Damström Groove op.38 for flute and accordion (2015)

A core idea of the concert is to explore the limits, both technical and expressive of the flute. The concert will also feature visual art, which will be created live during the concert. The idea of combining music with visual art stems from the realisation that the two art forms were closely intertwined in France during the beginning of the twentieth century. This has inspired Gorkun-Silén to explore the interconnectedness of music and visual art.
