The winner of the 2022 Sibelius Violin Competition, South Korean Inmo Yang, concludes Tapiola Sinfonietta's spring season under the baton of Hannu Lintu and with the power of two works. Karl Amadeus Hartmann composed his Concerto funèbre in 1939, as the Nazis began their attempt at world domination. The composer, who retreated into internal exile because of his violin concerto, stated: 'The intellectual and spiritual hopelessness of our time is met with a spark of hope.' The spark burned brightly in 1926, when Paul Hindemith composed his Kammermusik No. 4. The soundscape of this violin concerto is spread between the piccolo flute and the bass tuba, and the cheerful dedication is addressed 'to the birthday of Yashnykneshpeff, the dear lion.' At the age of 15, when Mendelssohn composed his first symphony for full orchestra, he was already a veteran of the genre, with 12 symphonies for strings behind him. Beethoven's 'Grosse Fuge' sharpens the concert with contrapuntal primal force.
